Get ready for your next outdoor adventure with this guide. Find out what you need to pack and be prepared for any situation while enjoying nature.
Are you getting ready for an outdoor adventure?
Whether it’s a short day hike or a long-distance expedition, knowing what to take hiking can make all the difference between having a great time and finding yourself in a life-endangering situation.
Here is a quick guide to some essential day hiking gear that should be in your hiking backpack — so don't forget to double-check before setting out!
Clothing
When packing clothing for any hiking trip, comfort and practicality are key.
- Depending on the climate of your destination, you may want layers upon layers of clothes to keep your body warm or just one light t-shirt for hot conditions.
- You also want hiking boots, hiking shoes, or trail runners (avoid sandals!) that are breathable yet provide good support for long walks.
- Don’t forget sun protection such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen — and always try to pack a rain jacket just in case the weather changes.
Food & Water
Aside from clothing, snacks and hydration are two of the most important things when it comes to packing a bag for hikes.
- Bring plenty of food with you including snacks like nuts, jerky, and dried fruits — this will help keep your energy levels up throughout demanding treks.
- As far as water goes, bring at least one liter per person per hour that you're going to be active — and if possible, some sort of water purification device so you can refill at natural sources like creeks or rivers without worrying about contamination.
Trekking Gear
Apart from food and clothing, there are some additional trekking items that need to go into your bag too.
- Things like a compass, flashlight/headlamp, a map, or a GPS device.
Depending on the terrain you'll be walking through, they might never get used but having them is always better to be safe than sorry.
Some more possible items to bring if your heading out into unfamiliar territory:
- A knife could come in handy as well.
- Trekking poles would be a good idea for steep hikes.
- Don’t forget a first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes/creams, etc can become invaluable during times of emergency or injury.
- Toilet paper is essential for me, you never know when nature calls.
- Bear spray is another item I like to bring. This can also be used on other animals like mountain lions and even humans.
- An emergency shelter is never a bad idea or at least an emergency blanket if you need to survive a night in cold weather.
Ten Essentials for Hiking
Never underestimate the power of preparation! When headed into the wilderness, these are considered the 10 essentials in order to be prepared for any worst-case scenario.
While the above-mentioned items aren't all essential, make sure to at least carry the following items:
- Map & Compass/GPS
- Sun Protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
- Extra Clothing
- Headlamp or Flashlight
- First-Aid Kit
- Fire Starter (matches, lighter, tinder)
- Knife or Multi-tool
- Extra Food and Water

By considering these day hiking essentials when planning what supplies to take along for day hikes — whether it’s an easy stroll down an old forest path or a tough mountain summit expedition — everyone involved will have an enjoyable experience free from worry about being unprepared in any way.
